Auli’i Cravalho Calls Queer Rom-Com Co-Star Rowan Blanchard Biphobic (2024)

This is messy, y'all.

In a now-deleted TikTok video, bisexual Moana star Auli'i Cravalho called out fellow queer actress Rowan Blanchard for alleged biphobia.

The video, which is a duet Cravalho made with a video celebrating that she and Blanchard were cast opposite each other in an upcoming queer teen coming-of-age romance, shows Cravalho looking happy when the original video shows the news and pictures of her, but covers her eyes when Blanchard is on screen.

Cravalho captioned the TikTok: "She's still biphobic but this movie is going to be so cute and queer!!!"

And I- OOP!

Blanchard, who starred in the Disney Channel series Girl Meets World, and Cravalho recently filmed the movie Love in Color, a high school coming-of-age story that sees a young artist join her school's track team and unexpectedly fall in love with one of her team members. The movie is set to premiere on Hulu sometime in the coming years.

We don't know exactly what happened between the two on set, but it seems like something transpired. When one follower commented on Cravalho's video saying, "crying cause that's literally ur co worker," Cravalho apparently replied, "I was also crying."

These new accusations have also brought up some old tweets that Blanchard liked that have been called biphobic.

In a tweet from 2019, a user shared a couple of tweets Blanchard had liked. One, from writer Andrea Long Chu, says "str* married bi girls are like those kids who studied abroad in college and five years later are still somehow weaving it into every conversation. Like we get it [Christa] you lived in [Madrid.]"

“for the people who dont know, these are the biphobic tweets rowan blanchard liked, followed by her condescending apology where she blames being called out for liking them on cancel culture and says thats why she gave up on activism”

Some fans also took issue with Blanchard's apology about liking the tweets. At the time, she said "I'm queer as f*ck! My boyfriend's a trans man and honestly none of [you] guys know sh*t about my private life! I liked some tweets that were specific to a tweet between a community of writers whose tweets I find typically funny and interesting and hilariously cynical."

She then went on to talk about how "cancel culture" is toxic and had discouraged her from participating in public activism. While Blanchard made a good point about how queer fans often scrutinize and criticize queer celebrities much harsher than they do straight, cis celebs, declaring that you're giving up being an activist is not a good look. But Blanchard's likes weren't the only reason she's in hot water with bi fans.

This is where the heavy biphobia comes in. Blanchard's boyfriend at the time, a model and trans man named Frank Ayzenberg, reportedly posted an Instagram Story back in 2018 (according to screenshots posted by fans on Twitter) that was also called out, and very rightfully so. "Bisexuality infers a gender binary that doesn't exist," Ayzenberg allegedly wrote. "It's an outdated term and frankly should be removed from the LGBTQIA+ acronym. Bisexualty often doesn't include trans poeple and nonbinary people. There is only queer. There is only love."

“@RowanBlanchard you and your bf need to get ur facts straight lmfao. calling bisexuality an outdated term??? who are you to say that?? bisexuality has NEVER excluded trans folk and u saying that it does, is guess what!!! transphobic!! research lgbt history before u speak thx 💓”

While Ayzenberg's comments might've come from a good place, they also come from a very misguided and ignorant place. Bisexuality has always included trans and nonbinary people and does not rely on a gender binary to exist.

We don't know if Ayzenberg's 2018 comments or Blanchard's old liked tweets have anything to do with Cravalho's video. She could have been referring to on-set behavior.

Hopefully, Blanchard (and Ayzenberg) have become more educated on bisexuality, and she can work this out with Cravalho and make things right. Both of them are very talented young queer actors and we want to see them get along. We'll update this story if more information comes to light.
