Will a rolled bat pass a compression test? ›

Bats rolled to this max spec will not pass any compression testing, but will perform to their max level right away. Our Standard Heated Bat Rolling Service includes a compression test of the bat right away so we have a reference point of the current stiffness.

Again, these types of methods are illegal. They are only condoned in home run derbies and should not be used in sanctioned league play or tournaments. Legal break-in methods for baseball bats and softball bats are recommended.

Weight Tests

Simply using a kitchen scale can help you identify whether or not a bat has been shaved. Plenty of baseball and softball bat manufacturers are notorious for producing bats that weigh more than their sticker weight.

A compression test is performed by then cranking the engine. This will then allow the gauge to read multiple compression strokes from that cylinder. Allow the engine to spin until the gauge has received at least six “puffs”, then release the key.

Heat Rolling

We have done extensive testing rolling bats after heating them and found that it actually is counterproductive to breaking in the bat. The heat temporarily stretches out the bat's fibers so that when you roll it you are not accomplishing any break in.

These can be wiped off with a cleaning product most of the time, but there are some bats where the marks are still visible to the trained eye. So the answer to the question is yes and no. If you get a bat rolled correctly, to my knowledge, there is no way to detect it has been rolled other than compression loss.

If you are caught using a ROLLED or SHAVED bat you can receive an immediate Two (2) to Five (5) Year suspension from the governing association. If you are caught a second time you can receive a LIFETIME BAN from that association.

Some fruit bats eat up to twice their body weight in sugary mangoes, bananas, or figs every day to not only survive, but thrive. Unlike humans, these flying mammals can have an essentially permanent sweet tooth and do not develop some of the negative health consequences such as diabetes.

Aim to hit the ball with your bat's “sweet spot,” roughly five to seven inches from the top of the bat. Keeping the bat parallel to the ground and level with the ball will better ensure that you still hit the ball even if you miss it with the bat's sweet spot.

Another way to tell if a bat has been rolled is the graphics peeling off the bat in odd places, normally where the end of the rollers meet the bat. Another way to tell if a bat has been rolled is by residue from bat roller material left behind on the bat. And this can cause "roller marks" to be left on the bat.

Bat rolling is a process that can add incredible pop and distance to any softball or baseball bat. Everyone knows that bats get hotter after about 500-800 hits.

Bats that are broken, altered or that deface the ball are illegal. Materials inside the bat or treatments/devices used to alter the bat specifications and/or enhance performance (e.g., shaving, rolling or artificially warming the bat barrel) are prohibited and render the bat illegal.

Properly taken compression readings can provide insight into the condition of valves, valve seats, piston rings, and other parts related to the combustion chamber's ability to hold pressure. There are also “running compression tests” mechanics do that can be done but those usually can't be performed by DIYers.
