5 unique smoothie recipes to kick start your morning (2024)

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Breakfast-haters everywhere have discovered the magic of smoothies.

It’s the perfect day-starter for those who just can’t eat in the morning -- it’s fast, healthy and you can take it on the go.

But if you’re a die-hard smoothie consumer, you know that sipping the same thing every morning while kicking off your day can get boring.

We’ve come up with 5 recipes that are not your average smoothie. If you can’t stomach another combination of strawberries and bananas, we’ve thought of a few unique ingredients to help mix things up, and keep it tasty.

1. Hidden greens smoothie

1 cup of spinach

1 cup of kale

½ of an avocado, diced

1 cup of diced mango

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

2 cups of water

Ice

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

This smoothie is a great way to sneak in vegetables in the morning without sacrificing taste. If you’re really trying to mask the flavor of the greens, feel free to add in more mango or chunks of pineapple to bring up the sweetness. Or a tablespoon or maple sugar or honey will also amp up the sugar.

2. Tropical splash smoothie

1 cup of pineapple

1 cup of mango

½ cup of frozen passion fruit pulp

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

1 tablespoon of flax seeds

2 tablespoons of coconut cream

1 ½ cups of almond milk or water

Ice

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

This is the ideal smoothie for a hot summer day. You can find passion fruit pulp in the frozen aisle of some grocery stores, particularly ones with large Hispanic food sections. You can mix the fruit up with this and add whatever flavors you have that will compliment, such as dark cherries, papayas, blueberries and more. You can find cans of coconut cream, or scrape the top layer off of a can of coconut milk for the same effect. This step is optional, but really makes the flavor resemble a pina colada.

3. PB&J smoothie

2 cups of mixed berries (blueberries, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, etc.)

¼ cup of nut butter (peanut butter, almond butter, etc.)

½ banana

1 1/2 cup of almond milk

1 tablespoon of chia seeds

Ice

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Who doesn’t love peanut butter and jelly? This is a healthier way to indulge in the flavor pairing while still getting in your daily serving of fruit. The chia seeds and berries in this smoothie are loaded with antioxidants and vitamins that will also provide a lot of fiber into your diet to help with digestion.

4. Blood red smoothie

1 cup of beet juice or ½ cup of raw chopped beets

1 cup of frozen cherries

½ cup of spinach

Juice of 1 lime

1 ½ cup of water

Ice

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

The unlikely flavor combination of beets, cherries and lime is to die for. If you really want to hide the beet flavor, feel free to add in a ½ cup of raspberries as well for more fruit. If you’re using raw beets, beware when dicing because it will dye your hands, fingers and countertop blood red.

5. Fall harvest smoothie

2 cup of diced apples

¼ cup of rolled oats

½ cup of greek yogurt

½ banana

1 cup of almond milk

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1 teaspoon of nutmeg

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1 tablespoon of honey or maple syrup

Ice

  1. Mix all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth.

Instead of grabbing a pumpkin spice latte on your way to work this fall, try to make a healthier smoothie at home with all of those fall flavors you love. Fee free to play around with the seasonings based on what you have, and try to think of ingredients you’d put into an apple pie. For this recipe, sweeter apples create a better result but if you’re stuck with what you have, just amp up the amount of honey or maple syrup you had based on how it tastes.
